Hello, Gorgeous!
Today's blog topic dates back all the way to ancient Egyptians. What topic could possibly still be relevant after thousands of years? Makeup. With TONS of new and innovative cosmetic products, brands and price points to choose from these days, it's hard to believe how far beauty products have evolved! I don't know about you, but when I go into stores like Ulta, Sephora, or MAC , I'm overwhelmed by the selection they have to offer. (Grateful for it, but overwhelmed simultaneously!) Makeup can be SO much fun and so versatile, but that can make it very difficult to narrow down your wedding makeup look!
Seeking the help of a professional makeup artist may be the most helpful resource for you! They are familiar with different skin tones, complexions, blending and customizing looks to personally fit their clients! Plus, being pampered on your wedding day is always nice and it makes for one less thing for you to worry about! If you are looking to hire a makeup pro, here are some things to consider:
- How long have they been in business for?
- Can they show you samples of their work?
- Do they have positive client reviews?
- Do they use makeup brands they are familiar or leave it up to you to provide your own?
- Do they offer a makeup trial?
- Does their foundation contain SPF?
A makeup artist is no different from any other type of "artist" you hire for your wedding day (photography, videographer, musicians, etc). If you are making room in your budget for a makeup artist, it's important to hire somebody with bridal makeup experience, who can provide you with samples of their work and has decent reviews from their former clients.
I've had some brides tell me that their makeup artists tell them to bring their own makeup, and they will simply apply it for them. This would be the equivalent of me, a photographer, showing up to a wedding and expecting the bride to provide me with whichever camera she felt was best. This should be a red flag. A skilled makeup artist only uses cosmetic brands they know and trust! They have invested in their makeup collections and know the products that will stand up to all-day wear, even through the tears and the "glistening" (cause we all know girls don't sweat ;) lol)!
Most makeup artists will provide either a consultation or a makeup trial. Some are offered complimentary with booking, while others are offered at an additional cost. Either way- it's a good idea to take advantage of them to ensure there are no surprises on your wedding day!
Last but not least, it's important that your makeup artist is using products that don't contain SPF. While SPF is ideal for daily sun protection, you don't want to use it on your wedding day. As much as I try to avoid using it, there are times throughout a wedding day when I may need to use my camera flash. When the flash fires, the SPF in a makeup will block the light on your skin and create a mask effect, making it easy to see where your makeup ends and your true skin tone begins.
If you're a DIY bride like I was, opting to do your own makeup is always acceptable, as well! :) I personally didn't want anything too fancy and I wanted to feel like myself on my wedding day, so I chose to do my own makeup. I took the time to research a few different brands of makeup and put them to the test before my big day. Here are some products that worked for me and that I would highly recommend!
- MAC Pro Longwear Foundation : Matte Finish; Long-lasting; Face feels clean & fresh
- Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray : Sets Makeup; Enhances highlighters
- Urban Decay Eyeshadow : Super pretty shades; Perfect amount of pigment & shimmer
- Urban Decay Eden Eyeshadow Primer : Makes eyeshadow "pop"; Keeps shadow in place; Doesn't crease!
- Elf Foundation Blending Brush : Makes a little bit of foundation go far; Natural-looking coverage
- Elf Baked Highlighter & Blush Duo : Perfect amount of highlight & blush combo!
- Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick : Smooth & even application; Pretty pearl finish
Keep in mind, a lot of beauty stores will give you samples of products, which can be very helpful (and easier on your wallet!). If you have a certain makeup that you LOVE, drop it in the comments below! I'd love to hear your suggestions!
